Here I'm going to take you on a Behind-The-Scenes look at our projects we worked on for Sea World San Antonio for their HOWL-O-SCREAM season.
2007 Season
Nikki Young of Primadonna Productions, www.myspace.com/primadonnaproductions, had refereed us to Sea World to help them out with their Halloween product HOWL-O-SCREAM. The Entertainment Department where very glad and highly excited to have us come aboard. We had the major task of creating new designs for the creature makeups and actor makeup fx tutorials and classes. The biggest request was the remake of the HOWL-O-SCREAM Lead Character, JACK-O-LANTERN. The department heads wanted a newer, stylized image of JACK, different from the one used in the advertisements. We made the Jack face more like a hybrid pumpkin creature. Once we got the OK back from the head offices, we got started working by getting an impression of actor Chuck Cureau's face.
Actor Chuck Cureau, the Infamous JACK-O-LANTERN
JACK-O-LANTERN Ver 1
We took a life cast of actor Chuck Cureau's face to make a sculpt of the new JACK prosthetic. This was casted and made a foam rubber latex prosthetic that was glued onto the actor's face for every performance. We had to get timing down to a science because of the nature of the performances.
Here's a look at the finished product in action:
2008 Season
Sea World called us back with a newer staff and bigger plans for the '08 season. The new heads of the Entertainment Dept. wanted a whole revamp of the JACK mask to look more like the promotional video on the TV Commercials. So back to Square 1...
New Life cast
We had to take a life cast of Chuck's full head and upper torso to for the main base of the new JACK Sculpt. He has been a real trooper to be under all the alginate impression cream and plaster bandages for another go around...
JACK-O-LANTERN Ver 2
You can see an old plug of the JACK ver 1 foam prosthetic on the table next to the sculpt.
We had optioned to go with a Silicone mask instead of the traditional prosthetics. This gives the actor the same ability to emote his expressions as he would with a foam prosthetic with the freedom of removing the mask without gluing it down to his face. This was a huge relief to Chuck because his time in between performances where brief and was able to rest easier and more comfortably in between sets.
PUMPKIN FISH
Pumpkin Fish was an idea to have a roaming mascot to walk around the more child friendly parts of the park. The actor's head and arms would be the "fins" of the Pumpkin fish. The sculpt was pretty huge. It was resting on a regular diner table. Unfortunately, we where cut way short of time due to materials coming in late that we weren't able to finish the Pumpkin Fish product on time. It will resurface again for the 2009 season.
That's all for now... we'll see what 2009 holds in store for THE DARKNESS...
